It's been almost a year since my last update and I'm down to eight months to finish whatever I can.

I have to say that I'm happy with all the things I've done so far. It's probably more than I would have if I hadn't made this list ten years ago.

Okay, so things I checked off in 2023.

Blood Donations: 6/2022, 11/2022, 3/2023, 5/2023, 8/2023--and I'm scheduled to donate later today 1/2024

Hubby and I started ballroom dance lessons in August of 2023 and we're loving every minute of it! We're concentrating on waltz, rhumba, salsa, swing, with minors of foxtrot and the hustle. It's been a blast and we intend to continue.

I watched a lot of youtube videos and masterclass classes on drawing. It wasn't pretty, but I tried!

That doesn't seem like a lot of stuff for a year, but I'm okay with that. I worked on many other things that have made me a better person. There was a lot of introspection in which I learned why I do (and want/fear/hope/fail at, etc) which was much needed. It's changed my perspective on what is important and helped me to adjust my goals and expectations.

The big question is always: What is the most important thing for me to do, right now?

What I still hope to accomplish this year:

Write a letter to all the people who have made a difference in my life

30 days of Random Acts of Kindness (big ones, like pay for someone's dinner, or grocery bill)

Make the front landscaping awesome

Enter a ballroom dance competition with my hubby

Take a hot air balloon ride

Build up our savings so we can serve a mission one day

Donate to a local pet shelter (time or money)

Build a community to connect with readers

Charity Bradfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01960821077619680661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538188539737524300.post-33604657850482980432022-05-31T16:17:00.006-05:002024-01-08T08:34:58.457-06:00Updating the Status of the List
The ten years is flying by. Some are simply started, others completed, and one is in limbo due to COVID-19.

Let's start at the top of the list and work our way down.

Goal #1--in 2018 I lost that thirty pounds and it felt wonderful. I did it by cutting gluten and milk from my diet and simply walking every day. Sadly, I gained it all back in 2019 by starting to eat bread again. 2020 saw me going back to what I needed to do and then we got whammies. I'm afraid I'm eating junk for comfort and ruining all my progress. I have no will power.

Goal #4 Publish Eleena's story--This one took six years to pull off, but THE HAND OF ATUA was published in February of 2019. It's a hearty 90K young adult space opera. It's in KU and also available on audiobook.

A prince, his teacher's daughter, multiple planets, refugees, and a God waiting for a boy to grow into a man with the faith to change the galaxy. Heartache and hope, fear and love, the living and the dead are all in Atua’s hands.

Goal #5--I'm still trying to make myself rip Talia's world apart. We're 40K into it.

Goal #8--Donated blood in September and December of 2019, and donated in April of 2020.

Goal #14--We've finally started adding some more landscaping to our rocky front yard. I wouldn't call it awesome yet, but it looks so much better than it did before.

Goal #21--I finally made it to the Grand Canyon early January of this year. I made a 5-day circuit of the US with my daughter (taking her the long way back to college), my senior, and our exchange student. It was an "epic" trip as Rens would say. We've been told we visited the "ugly" side of the Grand Canyon, but it was still gorgeous. The entire trip was filled with a variety of landscapes that made my heart happy.

South Rim, Grand Canyon, January 2019

Goal #45--Hubby and I booked a Mediterranean cruise in December of 2019. It was supposed to take place June of 2020. Yeah, not going to happen. Thank you Coronavirus. *grumbles* The good news is we can simply move it. But how do you know when to re-book? When will it really be safe to travel the world again?

So, making progress, but maybe I need to print this list off and post it next to my desk. It's so easy to forget that I wanted to do some of these things. Especially as the world changes and my goals change too.

For instance, I'm learning how to podcast. I've recorded six episodes. I like some of them, and some of them I don't. The biggest thing is finding the balance between talking naturally and following enough notes to say all the things I want to say. The last few have swung to far into "reading" territory and I don't like it.

The fix? The next podcast will include interviews with my children. Yeah, that will be as natural as you can get!

In writing news, I also published Teacher's Crush in 2019. It's another contemporary romance set in my Eureka Springs (small-town) series. Check it out if you like that kind of thing. Also in KU and available in audiobook.

Jennifer Carlson returns to Eureka Springs. A newly graduated teacher, her only goal is to help her dad and get out of town. However, the good-looking biker has her second guessing what she really wants.

High school principal, Robert Allen has never been so conflicted. Jen needs a job, but he wants her for his own. Can he convince her to stop running away?Charity Bradfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01960821077619680661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538188539737524300.post-73005823933217042662018-03-14T13:35:00.002-05:002018-03-14T13:35:48.253-05:00I need to reviseFunny thing, I'm a year older than I thought. Nothing dramatic, I just stopped keeping track as well after turning 40. When I realized I'd actually be 44 this year and not 43, I pulled up this blog and reread my goals. Some of them need to be revised.

Why?

Because a couple of them were for a house I moved out of 2 years ago. So, I'm tweaking the master list to reflect some of those changes. I also didn't record when I donated blood in 2016 or 2017, but I was donating almost every 8-9 weeks until I started doing doubles in September of 2016. I'll put two dates I know for certain, then try to do better this year.Charity Bradfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01960821077619680661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538188539737524300.post-14776245928119821542017-10-19T10:07:00.002-05:002017-10-19T10:07:30.788-05:00New direction and progress on Goal #5Now that I've been home several days, I can report things are moving along for the re-release of my Magic Wakes series. We've got new cover art for the first three books! Take a look and tell me what you think. These were all designed by Tamara Hart Heiner who is also an amazing author.
I'll be re-releasing the first two in the series sometime the first week of November. Demon Rising is about half way finished, but this amazing cover has inspired me to get writing again. My goal is to have it out by fall of 2018.
Talia's Sequel is with WiDo PublishingIt's official (actually it was official last Friday), WiDo Publishing has picked up Talia's sequel. All the paperwork is signed and they've announced it on their website. You can read the interview HERE.

Thankfully, we'll finish stage one of renovations on our house by the time I need to start working with an editor. I'm excited for that. It's possibly one of my favorite parts of being an author. That's when you get to take something good and make it shine. It will also put me firmly in Talia's world so I can get back to drafting book three in the series. I REALLY want to get the first crummy version on "paper" by the end of the year. With hard work, and some luck, I can get that one out in a year instead of two. That's my goal anyway.Charity Bradfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01960821077619680661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538188539737524300.post-3473058006592064992015-05-18T21:32:00.001-05:002015-06-19T22:13:14.646-05:00Progress on Goal #5 Talia's Story

I've finished a couple of revisions of Book 2 in the Sendek Saga. It's now with my publisher. That's progress! I'm waiting to hear if they need more revisions or if it's close enough to work with their editor.

I'll keep you posted, but until there's news, here is the blurb for it.

The Dragumon have been defeated, but Sendek will never be the same. Lines are being drawn between those who can work magic and those who can’t. Talia and Landry Sutton have a plan to create a Mage Council to govern the use of magic. They hope it will keep the peace long enough for them to travel to Orek and learn how Jaron’s world successfully combined magic and science.

Talia hasn’t dreamed for months, but on the eve of leaving for Orek her nightmares return. She knows they must make the journey to discover the truth about the dragons, how to use magic and how to bring peace back to their world. However, if they do, she could lose what matters most—Landry.
The first anthology, highlighting 12 of the great entries from the high school contest is now available in print and for kindle on Amazon. I'll be posting it on other online stores like Smashwords soon.

This book was a lot of fun to compile. Many of the students exchanged emails with me as we worked on some edits. In the end I had to do a few on my own, but I only edited "lightly". The goal was to retain the author's voice and style. This means there are some verb tense issues, but it is what it is--a highlight of raw talent.

A glimpse into the future of speculative fiction.

Get your copy today and help spread the word. All royalties earned from the sale of this book will be saved for the 2015 contest prizes. Last year we gave away $200 of cash prizes to the students. Remember it was free for them to enter. I'd love to keep it this way and selling the anthology is a great way to raise the prize money.
We found some stuff we LOVED. However the bed alone cost $1700. We could have done it, but we've worked really hard to move toward debt free and that felt like a lot of cash for a bed. I mean, we've been married 18 years and never spent more than $50 on a bed frame.

We came home and were both proud of ourselves for being smart and bummed out because we didn't buy anything. Then my hubby came up with a new plan. For a fraction of the cost, he could make a headboard similar to what we wanted to buy, plus we could buy the fireplace, paint and accessories.

Here's where we are after the weekend.

The homemade headboard--from 2 doors
Hubby got the side tables for $5 each off Craig's List and refinished them
White comforter
Decorative Pillows
1 of the Lamps and both shades
Not pictured but purchased--the fireplace heater (our room is the coldest in the house)

Still to get:
new paint color on walls
new couch for sitting area or something to cover the hideous one currently there
a few finishing touches
You can order your print copy, or pre-order your kindle copy. The kindle version will automatically be sent to your Kindle on Monday, January 26th if you pre-order. It's ready, I just wanted to try the pre-order function and later found out I can't remove it! I've put it as early as Amazon will let me.

After the first 3 months on KDP Select, I'll release FIM as an Epub for Nook as well.

Remember, if you pledged on my kickstarter, I'll be sending your rewards. I've ordered the print copies of the book and as soon as I get them, they will be on their way to you. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I've enjoyed writing it. Here's the blurb once again and the trailer.

Back Cover--
Caeden Frey doesn’t believe humans will evolve to see the magic, much less control it. Even so, he has two months to marry a human or face the wrath of the High Council. Bitter about a responsibility he thinks prevents him marrying for love, he figures any human girl will do. He’s ready to propose when his soul mate stumbles into—and right out of—his arms.

Human, Ryanne Killian might be Caedan’s one shot at happiness while still fulfilling his duty. Unfortunately, she guards a dark secret. She’s determined to push Caedan away to protect him from her past.

Caedan must convince her she’s worthy of his love before a rival family puts an end to his wedding plans. If she can see her own worth, she just might save herself and his people.

Create an email list for my readers to get inside information.

Check! I've set up a mailchimp account. Now all I need is for people to subscribe. I don't plan on using it to spam accounts. It's simply a way I can let people know if I'm releasing a new novel or going to be in their area for a book event.

If I get really creative, I might host special contests or giveaways just for those loyal people who want to know some of the behind the scenes writerly things. Trivia? Who knows!

figure out a new domain name since mine is taken

Get cover finalized and the full cover wrap for print

For Nanowrimo 2011 I met a troubled girl named Ryanne. She had secrets I didn't want to uncover, but her desperate need to be loved in spite of her scars kept drawing me back to her. I finally finished her story in 2013. Early this year I dug into revisions with a drive I hadn't felt since THE MAGIC WAKES (WiDo Publishing, 2013).

FIM has been through multiple beta readers and grown into something I never could have planned. Some people will love it. Others won't get it. It's about a co-dependent girl who protects those who hurt her and runs from those who can make her whole. Her reactions and inner struggles are based on similar ones of many women I've met in my life. All of us had to learn we are worthy of love and embrace those who knew too.

This month I'm running a kickstarter to pay for a professional editor and typesetter. With any luck, I'll make my goal and this book will be available early next year. Please take a moment to watch my video about the project. The book trailer is at the end. Then think of it this way, a $12 pledge is like pre-ordering a signed print copy of FADE INTO ME. I will be selling the print copy for $12 on Amazon and other places when it's available, but it won't be signed!

Caedan Frey’s family has fulfilled this duty for thousands of years, but it doesn’t free him from his obligation as prince of the Reparation. Although he doesn't believe humans will evolve to see the magic, much less control it, he has two months to marry one or face the wrath of the High Council. Bitter about a responsibility he thinks prevents him from marrying for love, he figures any human girl will do. He's ready to propose when his soul mate stumbles into—and right out—of his arms.

Fade Into Me was a remarkable read. I couldn't put it down! Bradford writes the story with so much conviction, I wondered if she was trying to tell us all something about the human race. The book is clean and well written. The character building hooked me from page one. The author's imagination helps make the book come to life. I give the book a 5 out of 5 rating! Great read for all audiences! I can't wait for others to be able to discover this new Urban Fantasy!

Goal #1This past week was something else. We had planned a family vacation to Tennessee. A camping, boating, family reunion fun time! Four hours into the drive we got a phone call from my husband's family. His father had a stroke.

The next few days were full of mixed blessings. His father is improving a little more each day, but it's going to be a long process. We felt blessed to be half way to him when the call came in. It was good to see him and many others in the family. What a blessing it is to have such a strong family around to help lift and support each other.

Now for the wake up call. Between my father-in-law and the family reunion, Nathan and I were reminded that we need to take better care of ourselves. No one can make us eat healthy and exercise. No one else can make those decisions for us. But we can decide to do those things so we can spend more years with our children and future grandchildren.

Nathan and I both decided last weekend that NOW is the time.

We are going to run the Country Music Marathon in April. The full. We've decided it's going to be our way of celebrating turning 40.

Training starts Monday, but today I started with walking and weights.

Goal #1--Run a Marathon will be checked off on April 25th, 2015
Lots of running here and there, wrapping up the end of the school year, getting kids ready for summer camps, cleaning the house (Boo!) and every once in a while the opportunity to work on a goal.

The two goals I'm working on at the moment are #40 and #15. That's:

Start my own high school short story contest

Get Fade Into Me published

I've finished a lot of the ground work for the contest. The webpage is up, so is Facebook. The best part is I now have four amazing authors signed on to help with judging this fall. Go check out their Bios! Now I just need to get the word out to students and high schools. Hopefully the dominoes are already falling on the student side, but I'm waiting until August to start contacting the high schools. Summer is the one glitch in my starting a fall contest!

Fade Into Me is mostly complete. I've sent several queries and received some requests. Those have turned into no's along the way but I'm not discouraged yet. Thanks to some great feedback from readers I'm going to add a few more scenes to build the relationship between Ryanne and Caedmon a little more. I've also had the discussion with my hubby regarding the question to keep seeking an agent or see if my current publisher is interested.

I really enjoyed WiDo and will gladly turn to them in time. Part of me just needs to try for that larger dream a little longer. My ambition is bigger than what I think they can accomplish at this time, but I know my skills have to improve as well.

You may recall that I started goal #34--Update Family History Book. That screeched to a standstill when I realized I would have to start completely from scratch. I just don't have the mental emotional strength to redo all my previous work at this time. So, I'm shelving it again for a while.

Perhaps it's because I just finished judging a short story contest for high school students. This was my third year and I've learned a lot from the experience. I think I'd like to do my own contest that is genre specific.

Imagination Begins With You is not specific and the talent is widely diverse. Which is wonderful! However, I keep thinking that if I could judge areas that I am more invested in, I might be able to give better feedback to these young writers. They are starting earlier than I did and therefore I feel they have the chance to really excel at this craft.

The plan:

Talk to the creator of IBWY and see how he pulls it off each year

Research some different methods for the students to submit their stories

Find scifi/fantasy authors who would be willing to judge

Pick a topic

Market, market, market!

Goal:

Have the rules and regulations, a website, facebook page, twitter account and judges ready to go by August 1st. With a November 15th entry deadline.

Summer project!

To be honest I feel a little overwhelmed. The program I used before is no longer on my computer and I don't know where the file is anyway. That means I will have to start from scratch. The original book was over 100 pages with scanned documents, photos and stories.

Where to start?

I believe I'll start with typing up all the stories. Maybe even try using the Dragon software my hubby bought me. Then I'll have to start begging all my relatives to scan and email me pictures for the book.

I also downloaded a new program that is compatible with my old PAF genealogy file. Hopefully that will make adding the pedigree charts and family group records easy to include. It's called Ancestral Quest 14.

I'll let you know what I think when I get a chance to sit down and play around with it.Charity Bradfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01960821077619680661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3538188539737524300.post-89085351535461499802014-03-29T14:12:00.000-05:002014-03-29T14:15:30.381-05:00Goal #12--Set up a dining room--CHECK!Yay! After nearly eighteen years of marriage, we now have a formal dining room. I feel so grown up! And I think it's time to plan a dinner party...if only there were a free weekend between now and June.
It started with paint...at 8:30 PM on a Friday night.

Today we drove around checking out Craig's List finds and brought home this

$20 table to fill this empty space. A pop of red and some family pictures make it feel homey.

I still don't know about the piano, but there isn't anywhere else to put it right now.

Eventually we will get a nice plant to put in the corner by the window.

But all in all, I'm really happy with the clean lines and modern feel to the room. Some day we will also find the perfect rug, maybe. Nathan is still trying to convince me that's a good idea. I'll also start collecting different color runners and look for some kind of centerpiece to put on the table. Maybe something for each season and holiday! Yep, that sounds like a good plan. A little here and there throughout the rest of the year.

What do you think?

The ongoing writing goals will be blogged about regularly on My Writing Journey, but I'll post any big news or goal accomplishments here as well.
Question for you--

Do you think I have to wait until my 40th birthday to actually get started on the non-writing ones?
